Marg Johnson has a good job and she worked hard to get it. She is humble about having a job when others don’t. Marg believes in perseverance. There is a job that will be right for you, but it takes work, planning, strategy and good fortune.
Marg changed jobs a lot in the first eight years of her marriage. Her husband’s career had them moving around. She has had her own craft store, sold newspaper advertisement, worked in a nursing home, has done bookwork and accounts payable. She has done a variety of jobs in the administrative support field. She was always adaptable and willing to learn. She gained many skill sets that she could take with her to her next job. She learned perseverance.
When Marg was laid off from her employer due to company restructuring, she found Life-Work Planning Center. As she had found the job market had changed, she wanted to find out how her job skills fit into this different time and place in the work world. So she began attending workshops at Life-Work Planning Center (LWPC). She found LWPC workshops were helpful to her to feel connected with other people when she was feeling alienated from the work world. She had the opportunity to learn from other people in similar situations. She could begin to understand how other unemployed people handled being unemployed. Together, they learned how to set boundaries, ways to boost self-esteem, decision making skills and stress management. Good life skills. Great skills for the stress that accompanies being out of work.
Marg attended the Job Search Skills workshop series after she completed the regular workshop series. She attended this workshop for verification of her personal thoughts of her job skills in the ever-changing job market. She worked to learn how her skills and the job world fit together. Interviewing skills, resume writing and how to keep work skills current were covered in the Job Search Skills workshop series.
Marg attended LWPC Networking meetings after completing the workshop series. She said it helped her stay connected with friends she had made, and share updates in their lives. Some members of her group began independently networking together to share common interests.
Marg said she learned about her goals and career plans through LWPC, saying ‘If things don’t go the way you plan them, it is okay. Don’t get depressed, feel guilty and don’t focus on meeting others expectations. Sometimes life takes you a different direction. Lay a course, go down it and see if it works or needs to be changed’.
